UPDATE: Huntsville Hospital CEO David Spillers said the system has 156 employees in Madison County that are out for coronavirus-related reasons.

Spillers said systemwide, there are 202 inpatients with coronavirus in North Alabama. Of those, 66 are in ICUs and 36 are on ventilators.

In Huntsville Hospital’s Madison County facilities, Spillers said there are 109 inpatients with coronavirus, 95 at Huntsville Hospital Main and Women’s and Children’s and 14 at Madison Hospital. Of those patients, Spillers said 35 are in ICUs and 25 are on ventilators.

There are 12 inpatients with coronavirus at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, with four in the ICU and two on ventilators.

Across North Alabama, there are 28 inpatients with coronavirus at Decatur Morgan Hospital, 25 at Marshall Medical Centers, 26 at Helen Keller Hospital, 26 at North Alabama Medical Center, 12 at Athens Limestone Hospital, one at Highlands Medical Center, one in Russellville and one in Lincoln County, Tennessee.

Spillers said the amount of coronavirus inpatients is a tremendous burden on clinical staff. He said these patients require more nurses, care and personal protective equipment. He said because of this, they’ve had to delay some elective procedures.

Spillers said they’re struggling to keep up with the amount of ICU beds needed. He said a manageable number of coronavirus patients is probably a third of what we're seeing today, and there is a long way to go in reducing hospital admissions.

“I'm very concerned about schools and Labor Day,” Spillers said.

He said we need to be thoughtful going into Labor Day and continue to wear masks. He also said he expects numbers to go up over the next few weeks with people being tested before going back to school.

Spillers said a large number of people in the state that had coronavirus have recovered. He said Huntsville Hospital has discharged almost 1,000 inpatients during the pandemic.

Spillers said the demand for testing over the last few weeks is down substantially. He said it’s down 20% from two weeks ago, and the demand is down to the point that they don’t plan to run a drive-thru testing clinic on Friday and Monday.

Spillers also said Huntsville Hospital is trying to hire more nurses.

Madison Mayor Paul Finley said numbers are moving in the right direction and masking is making a difference.
