UPDATE: The resolution passed unanimously. It allows the county to process an application to ask the State of Alabama if the statute can be moved.
Commissioner Malone said the monument is a part of history that no longer has the right to stay at the core of our community. He said they should give the people of Madison County what they deserve and what they expect.

Commissioner Phil Vandiver said the best option is to relocate it and have it be in conjunction with the confederate cemetery. He said it will preserve history and make the courthouse welcoming for everyone.
The City of Huntsville provided the following statements:
“The City of Huntsville pledges to work hand in hand with the Madison County Commission to help them find a suitable home for the monument in an appropriate historic context.” – Mayor Tommy Battle
“I am proud of the actions taken by the Madison County Commission to begin the process of relocating the statue. I am introducing a resolution in support of this effort at Thursday night’s City Council meeting.” - Council President Devyn Keith.
