A vehicle drove into Pizza Hut on South Memorial Parkway just after 1 p.m. on Monday.

Frank McKenzie, Huntsville Fire spokesperson, said no one inside the restaurant was injured even though a family was eating about 10 feet away.

The driver was not injured, either, McKenzie said. Both Huntsville police and Huntsville Fire and Rescue are investigating the incident.

Huntsville police said it all happened when the driver accidentally hit the gas instead of the break. The manager of the restaurant, Johnnie Ikard, said only five customers were inside and not near where it happened.

Ikard said an older woman who is a regular customer there was trying to enter the parking lot when she hit another vehicle that was trying to leave.

Witnesses told first responders that when the car entered the parking lot, the tires spun, the car clipped the front of another vehicle and it then ran into the building.

The building received extensive damage and the hole will have to be repaired and inspected before Pizza Hut can reopen.

"It was shocking. I was in the back getting ice, and all I heard was a loud noises and customers screaming. The first thing I thought was a shot gun, but it wasn't. It was a car crash," said Ikard.
