U.S. Attorney: I'm not pursuing defamation cases in relation to Moore accusations

Jay Town says he hasn't received any information about defamation cases against Moore accusers, and he wouldn't pursue them if he did.

U.S. Attorney Jay Town said he has not pursued any defamation claims against people in relation to claims made against U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore.

In a news release Thursday morning, Town said he had received local and national inquiries about claims that his office "has verified defamation cases" against Alabama citizens who have accused Moore "of certain behaviors."

"These assertions are patently absurd," Town said. "My office has not received, nor would we have the legal basis to pursue, any such defamation cases."

Moore, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, has faced accusations of misconduct with teenage girls. At least three more were reported Wednesday, including one by Tina Johnson, who said Moore groped her during a 1991 meeting in his law office.

Moore has denied all of the accusations against him.

Moore faces Democrat Doug Jones for the Senate seat in a Dec. 12 special election.
