A large tree fell onto an a building at the Hunter's Ridge Apartment's in south Huntsville, rendering the building unsafe for occupancy, according to a city building inspector.

Utilities are cut off to the building because of the extensive damage the tree caused when it split the middle of the building in two parts. Residents won't be allowed to move back in until the damage is fixed.

The city inspection department says it is now up to the apartment management on wether or not they want to fix the damage.

The complex is located off South Memorial Parkway and Golf Road.

WAAY 31 was on the scene in the moments after the tree fell on top of the building.

A resident tells us part of the tree fell into a bedroom in his apartment where children were playing. Michael Carr says he sprung into action to make sure his family and his neighbors got out of the building safely.

"So I thought it was just the wind, all of a sudden I hear, 'boom,' a crash. So we jumped up came back got them out and went out running around getting neighbors out of the house," said Carr.

Everyone was evacuated safely from the building. The building is taped off until further notice.
