Police release name of suspect in high-speed chase, wreck at Pulaski Pike and Mastin Lake

UPDATE: (4:40 p.m.) The suspect is 38-year-old Marius Moore. He was booked in the county jail on Alabama State Trooper charges for attempting to elude and reckless endangerment. He will be served with a Madison County Sheriff's Office warrant for possession of marijuana second-degree.

Huntsville police had six active warrants on Moore, prior to the crash. They say he’s been arrested by the department 21 times. Around half of these arrests are traffic-related.

In one instance in 2004, he fled a domestic violence scene Huntsville police responded to and almost hit an officer. He had a separate gun and drug charge in 2018.

The Madison County Sheriff's Office had an active felony warrant on Moore, prior to the crash.

Sarah Bensinger lives just down the road from where the chase ended. Law enforcement not calling off the chase concerned her, because of her family's experience of being victims of high speed chases,"My mom was involved in one. She was just driving. She was sideswiped, she was injured," said Bensinger.

The Alabama State Troopers were the lead agency in the chase. They are not releasing their high speed chase policy because this chase is under investigation. The Madison County Sheriff's Office was also involved. They told WAAY 31 they call off a chase if it is deemed to dangerous to the public.

"I think 30 minutes is a long time. I think you should gauge it at 'are we going to endanger other people in this process,'" said Bensinger.

Adrian Taylor of Huntsville doesn't have a problem with how long the chase took. He would have liked to see different tactics used, "If they had air support. That's the main thing the runner's lookin' for is police behind them and if they don't see police behind them then maybe they'll stop somewhere," said Taylor.

Bensinger would like to see the high speed chase policy change for both agencies involved, "I definitely think they should definitely use this as what to do and what not to do next time. Hopefully there's not a next time," said Bensinger.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office says four cars collided at Pulaski Pike and Mastin Lake when three of them got caught up in a high speed chase.

The sheriff’s office said Alabama State Troopers were trying to stop a Lexus SUV for a traffic violation. At one point during the chase, a female got out of the vehicle. The sheriff’s office continued the chase, leading to the collision. The female was not injured and is not facing charges.

Troopers say the chase started on Wall Triana Highway at about 1:30 p.m. It ended about 10 miles later at Pulaski Pike and Mastin Lake.

At least two people have been transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officials say they won’t release the name of the suspect driving the car until after he is booked in the Madison County Jail.

The sheriff’s office says the suspect had a total of six warrants out for his arrest: one felony warrant from them and five from the Huntsville Police Department.

He was out on probation but had it revoked, according to the sheriff’s office.
