An 18-year-old student at DAR School in Grant was killed in a crash Friday morning, according to Alabama State Troopers.

Family members have identified him as Eli Spray, a member of the school's football team

Troopers say the crash was between a Mitsubishi Eclipse being driven by Spray and a tow truck.

Spray, who was on his way to school, died on impact about 8:30 a.m., troopers said.

The wreck took place in the 6,300 block of Simpson Point Road.

Troopers continue to investigate the crash.

Eli Spray was leaving his home Friday morning for school when he got into a crash with a tow truck. Spras died on impact, with extensive damage to his car.

Spray was on the football team at DAR High School in Grant and for their last game of the season on Friday, the team honored his legacy.

"We just want to come out and honor eli and his life and what he meant for his team and the players", says Jeffrey Cantrell.

Cantrell is the president of the Quarterback Club for DAR High School. He says hours after word spread of Eli Spray's death, it was already hitting the community hard. Especially, his teammates.

"He was an inspiration to all of the underclassman. I think he really was a bright light and took care of the younger classmen and took them under his wing and tried to team them the right things, the right way", says Cantrell.

Eli was on his way to school friday morning when he was hit by a tow truck and killed on impact. His car was unrecognizable. The crash closed down Simpson Point Road for hours.

I spoke with Eli's family who arrived on the scene. They didn't go on camera, but told me he wanted to play football in college and already had a couple of offers. They told me he had a sister, was friendly to everyone, and loved to make people laugh.

"The school is really caught off guard with this one. It's a surprise and it's fresh", Cantrell says.

Cantrell tells us on Friday they will honor Eli at the final game of the season. That decision came after talk of possibly cancelling the game.

"For his family...They asked us to play the game. They said that eli would be upset if they didn't and I think the best way to honor eli now is to go show support for the other players and the team", he says.

DAR High School plays Brindlee Mountain in Guntersville at 7 pm.

The school wrote on facebook they plan on retiring eli's jersey, number 77, in honor of his legacy.
