A Madison County teacher is this year's Alabama History Teacher of the Year.

Erin Coggins teaches at Sparkman High School.

One of her former students has nominated her 3 times for the award, with her winning this year's top spot.

A panel of teachers, administrators and scholars choose Coggins for her achievements in American History education.

As part of the award, she wins $1,000, a Certificate of Recognition, an archive of books and historical resources, plus recognition at a ceremony.

"Being recognized, not just from your school, local level, your state level, just means so much. It's proving to people that we are more than just that 9 month teaching contract," said Coggins.

Coggins is now one of 53 finalists for the National History Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced this fall.
