Huntsville police arrested Troy Lynn Lewis, 65, for attempted murder for shooting at an officer Thursday.

Police said it happened just before 7:30 p.m. when an officer responded to a call about a suspicious person in a car stopped in the roadway near Triana Boulevard and Westmill Drive.

Police say after the first responding officer arrived, Lewis pulled a handgun from his pocket and began firing several rounds at the officer. Police say at least one bullet hit the officer's patrol car. The officer was uninjured, according to police. Police said the officer he was shooting at did not fire his weapon.

Police said Lewis then led officers on a chase. The chase ended near the Leeman Ferry Road and Bob Wallace Avenue intersection when Lewis tried to jump out of his car, according to police. Officers on scene said Lewis ran over his foot when he jumped out of the car, but did not need treatment for the injury.

Lewis was taken to Huntsville Hospital for a pre-existing medical condition, and he has not been booked into the Madison County Jail as of Friday afternoon.

Police said Lewis' vehicle is being impounded. Lewis could face more charges after the toxicology reports return from the state lab, according to police.

The case is still under investigation.
