A bridge at Huntsville Hospital was damaged after being hit by a truck on Monday.
According to Huntsville Hospital, at around 3 p.m., a commercial waste removal truck was traveling from the downtown area through the medical district, and struck the Gallatin Street pedestrian bridge.
The bridge, which connects Huntsville Hospital with the Blackwell Medical Tower, was damaged. The hospital says the truck’s hydraulic bed was in the up position, making the vehicle too tall for the bridge clearance.
According to the hospital, the truck hit the north side of the bridge as it traveled south on Gallatin Street. The hospital says this damaged the bridge façade and broke two windows.
A hospital employee was walking on the bridge at the time and received minor injuries. The hospital says the truck driver was not hurt.
The hospital has temporarily closed Gallatin Street, between Governors Drive and Sivley Road, to remove debris from the accident. The hospital says the bridge is being inspected for signs of structural damage.
Huntsville Hospital emphasized the truck was passing through the medical district and is not part of the hospital construction project on Gallatin Street.
