A teenager from Huntsvile had to be rescued from an overhang after jumping into the river at Little River Canyon Tuesday evening.
National Park Service officials said a 17-year-old and two of his friends jumped into the river near the Little Falls area around 7 p.m. Tuesday. While they were getting out of the water, he fell back in and was swept downriver, officials said.
Several area rescue squads and law enforcement agencies from DeKalb and Cherokee counties responded to help with the search, officials said, and the teen was found under an overhang on the east side of the river.
Crews were able to get the teenager off the bluff.
Park officials said water levels in the area have been at record high levels, and water temperatures are still cold, which make conditions on the river dangerous.
