Florence police say a man who was hired to clean up storm damage at an auto parts store ended up stealing almost $900,000 in merchandise from the store.
Jerry Ford, 49, of Killen, was arrested Thursday after a search of his home and a storage unit Florence police said he had rented in Center Star.
Ford was hired as a subcontractor for cleanup and demolition at the Advance Auto Parts on Cloverdale Road. The store was destroyed by a storm Nov. 18.
Police said they received tips that Ford was trying to sell items from the store and started investigating. They said Ford took about $890,000 in parts while he was working at the site.
Ford was charged with first-degree receiving stolen property. He was released from the Lauderdale County Detention Center on $2,500 bond.
