A man who was being taken to the hospital made a second stop at the jail after Athens police said he attacked paramedics in an ambulance.
Family members of Jesus Ceja, 26, reportedly called police Wednesday morning after he jumped on top of a car, damaging it. Family members said Ceja seemed to be under the influence of something, police said.
Ceja was loaded on a stretcher into the back of an ambulance and began fighting with EMTs in the back, police said. When one officer got into the ambulance, he said Ceja was choking one person.
Both officers who had responded to the scene struggled with Ceja, who lunged at and landed on one officer's knee, police said. He was eventually restrained and sent on to Athens-Limestone Hospital for treatment.
One police officer needed treatment for a knee injury he received in the struggle, police said.
After he was released from the hospital Wednesday evening, police charged Ceja with two counts of felony assault, one count of third-degree domestic violence and one count of disorderly conduct.
Ceja was jailed on bonds totaling $10,500.
