Update: Coroner Mike West said the female victim is Brandy Louise Parker, 31, of Athens.

Update: Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said the two people were walking north on the railroad tracks, just south of the McClellan Street crossing, when they were hit by a northbound train.

Two people were found dead on Monday at the train tracks at McClellan Street near Clinton Street in Athens.

One person has been identified as Lakerris Petty, 37, of Athens. Johnson said Monday afternoon that "as of this time, positive identification on the second person has not been determined." The coroner said the second victim is a female.

He said the train crew did everything they could to warn the people to get off the tracks before being hit, and the incident remains under investigation.

The train crossings are back open as of 4:50 p.m. Monday.

From earlier:

Limestone County Coroner Mike West said he is responding to two fatalities at the train tracks on McClellan Street near Clinton Street in Athens.

The city of Athens said the train was traveling north when the accident occurred about 1:30 pm. The two people were not in a vehicle at the time of the accident, according to a news release.

Athen Police say crossings from McClellan Street and to the south are blocked and will be until at least 4 p.m.
