Joe Davis Stadium fate still unclear

The stadium has been empty for the past 3 years and the city is still unsure what the next step will be.

Rocket City Fair may be happening outside in the parking lot of Joe Davis Stadium, but the stadium itself sits empty, three years after the Huntsville Stars threw out their final pitch.

Through next Monday the parking lot will be packed with fair goers, but once June rolls around it will be cleared out, just like Joe Davis stadium has been for years.
Something people who live in Huntsville tell WAAY 31 amounts to a waste of a property and money that could be coming into the city.

Tara Barnes has lived in Huntsville for years and tells WAAY 31 she moved to the Rocket City when the Minor League Stars baseball team was at their peak popularity. Seeing a team like the Bay Bears making the move to Madison makes her think the city of Huntsville needs to step up to the plate. Baseball fans will be driving to the new Town Madison Stadium instead of using a stadium like "The Joe" right here in Huntsville.

"I think it's funds taken out of Huntsville City and put into Madison City."

As people drive past the empty stadium on Memorial Parkway, it's a daily reminder of what has been, and what could be.

For Barnes she's seen abandoned stadiums transformed in the past and knows these venues can make a comeback for a variety of purposes.

"I remember I lived in Birmingham when they had the hoover met and they had the baseball and all there and now they use it for football. So there are different things it can be used for, I just find it to be a shame it's sitting empty."

It may not be sitting empty for too much longer. Huntsville's City Administrator tells WAAY 31 a developer is showing interest in a sports themed concept at Joe Davis. The city appears open to that prospect if the developer submits a proposal. So far though ... the city's waiting.

Also, talk started last year of turning the stadium into an ampitheatre. Something Barnes thinks would be a welcome attraction to the city.

"I do think something like an ampitheatre would be great because I think we're lacking something like that here."

While an ampitheatre sounds like it could be a possibility, the city says right now that might not be the best use for Joe Davis. Meanwhile, the fair is at least putting the parking lot to good use.

The city also tells WAAY 31 it's open to all ideas for the stadium. Around Joe Davis ... a 3.6 million dollar renovation project throughout John Hunt park is moving forward.
