An I-Team follow up after a second grade teacher told us a second grader caused those bruises and they sent her to the hospital.

It’s new information about students attacking teachers at Rolling Hills Elementary School in Huntsville. Teachers say changes made at the school aren’t enough.

WAAY 31 took our questions about the incident to Superintendent Matt Akin Thursday. He did confirm he is aware of the teacher's claims that she was attacked by a student but tried to pivot the conversation to the improvements at the school this year.

"We are certainly aware of it. It's not last year. It's a new year. We have a new principal at Rolling Hills. It's really a new administrative staff. We are really focusing on positive behavior," Akin said.

Thursday, Huntsville City School Superintendent Matt Akin wanted to look toward Rolling Hills' future instead of its past. WAAY 31 showed the Superintendent pictures of Carolyn Felkner's bruises she claims a second grader caused.

"Okay. When I say we are going to do a thorough investigation we will. We aren't going to tolerate any aggressive behavior toward teachers," Akin said in response to the pictures.

This investigation comes about a year after WAAY 31 first told you about students attacking teachers at the elementary school. Stories the district called “fake news.”

After we uncovered more than 10 on the job incident reports, the district hired two intervention tutors and an intervention teacher.
WAAY 31 asked Dr. Akin if the district is doing enough to protect teachers at the school.

"It doesn't worry me that things aren't changing because I know they are. I appreciate it. I appreciate the opportunity to reinforce that we are investigating, that we take claims seriously and to let our parents know and our community know we are 100 percent committed to a safe environment in our schools," he said.

After that answer, the Superintendent said he needed to head to a meeting.

After WAAY 31's interview with Superintendent Akin, Felkner’s family called and told WAAY 31 she was given 3 months of paid leave.

WAAY 31 called the district to find out why, but was told nobody can confirm or deny if Felkner’s even on leave.

As for the investigation into yesterday’s incident, that’s expected to take at least several days.
