A police officer who was shot Sunday night was able to return fire and killed his attacker, police said Monday morning.

Police also identified the man who was killed as William Freddy Carter Jr., 32.

Police said the officer was shot in the leg as he entered a home on Savoy Circle around 7 p.m. Sunday. Officers had responded to a domestic disturbance call at the home and had been told by neighbors that a mother and son had been arguing in the front yard.

Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Carter had an extensive arrest record. Madison County jail records show he had multiple arrests for domestic violence.

Carter was most recently arrested on May 10, 2017 for Domestic Violence-menacing. Documents state he plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge in May and was sentenced to 6 months in jail and probation for two years.

The officer was taken to Huntsville Hospital Sunday night and released on Monday morning.

Huntsville police did not release the officer's name but said he is a six-year veteran of the department. He is recovering at home with his family, police said.

All of the officers involved are on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.
