Returning runners were looking to make their best time, while first-time runners just hoped to reach that finish line.

However, for all the runners who decided to run in the 39th Annual Cotton Row Run, said it's because they want to honor those gave their lives in service of our country.

"That's the reason why we're able to be out here and run and have our freedom," said Kelly Lambert. She was running in her sixth Cotton Row Run.

Hundreds of runners flocked to the corner of Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street early Monday morning ready to run with a good dose of patriotism.

Four of the runners in the 10K had raced in every Cotton Row Run since it began in 1980. One of them only started because of a fluke.

"I came on a dare. I had never run that far and somebody dared me to do it. So I did it, enjoyed it and started running," said Jim Carroll.

The race attracts runners from across the southeast and even across the country.

"I heard it's very competitive, it's a very good race for me, so we're here to break the record," said Fatuma Jillo, a runner from Lansing, MI.

Meanwhile, others were just hoping to cross the finish line in a reasonable time.

"I'm nervous. I'm really nervous. I always get pre-race jitters," said Rob Ketcham, a first-time racer in the Cotton Row Run.

But with portraits of fallen servicemen and women marking the end of the line for the runners, they were sure to leave the race with the memory of someone who gave their life so they could race.
