A lightning strike caused a house to catch fire Saturday night, according to fire officials with both Harvest Volunteer Fire Department and Monrovia Volunteer Fire Department.

The call went out sometime after 7 p.m. on Saturday night. They said five people were displaced, including two adults and three children.

We spoke with firefighters about how the family's quick thinking saved their lives.

Monrovia and Harvest Fire and Rescue crews told us everyone should have a safety plan.

Even in the event of strong thunderstorms.

They told me the family was in a safe place once they arrived and that's what saved them.

Fire officials on scene told WAAY-31 lightning struck the second floor of this home on the 100 block of Farmington Road.

The home has some smoke damage to the upstairs area and minor water damage.

Unfortunately, safety concern hazards are preventing this family of five from living here.

But officials told us they are safe and happy to be unharmed.

Harvest and Monrovia fire officials told us they've seen quite a bit of lightning tonight.

They advise that if there is severe thunder and lightning, find a room, preferably downstairs, where you can get out easily if necessary.

Don Webster with Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. (HEMSI) said an ambulance was called also in to be on standby for the firefighters.

No one was injured as a result of the lightning strike or the fire.
