Porch pirates can strike without warning and cause serious headaches for their victims. As millions of Americans complete their Cyber Monday transactions, the thieves get more opportunities to strike.

That’s because they are targeting those porch package deliveries.

Nearly 15% of Americans report they have been victims of package theft in the last year, according to a recent survey by Finder.com. The average value lost from each swipe is about $150, and in the last year, Americans lost $5.4 billion total from package thefts.

But there are things you can do to fight back.

Experts advise avoiding the porch delivery all together by choosing curbside pickup from the store if possible.

Adding video surveillance won't foil the pirates, but it might deter them. Plus, experts say, it means having video evidence to hand over to law enforcement to track the culprits down.

Shoppers can also have orders shipped directly to a post office box, require a signature for delivery or have orders sent to their workplace. Experts suggest also having a neighbor you trust keep an eye on your porch.

The Finder.com survey also found that men are far more likely than women to engage in porch piracy — 500 times more likely, in fact. Meanwhile, Millennials had more packages stolen and averaged a higher loss per package stolen, while Gen Xers and Millennials admitted to stealing packages more than any other generation surveyed.
