Electronic poll books to make North Alabama debut in primaries

Tuesday, election volunteers in Madison County underwent training to use the new electronic poll books that will be used for the upcoming primaries.

We are now just two weeks away from the June 5th primaries and voters in Madison, Morgan and Jackson counties will notice some new technology when they show up to their voting precinct.

Electronic poll books will be making their debut this election cycle and Tuesday election volunteers underwent training.
Voters in those three counties may find shorter lines on June 5th with the new electronic poll books. All you have to do is scan your driver's license onto this Ipad, grab your receipt and you're off to the polls.

The new form of checking in at your precinct that is now being used in 23 states. Alabama is one of the states where the program was previously piloted and now they have officially launched the electronic books in 25 Alabama counties.

A system election volunteer Diana Rovere tells WAAY 31 she was pleasantly surprised by.

"I'm really impressed with how easy it is and I think it's going to help with voter fraud....I'm really excited about it."

Not only will it eliminate a large amount of voter fraud, it will also get you in and out of your precinct in record time as trainers tell me processing takes no more than 30 seconds.

"It is gonna do a great job of speeding up the election check in process. It notates voters who have already checked in so they can't check in multiple times so they're gonna show up as voted in green with the date and time stamp."

They will also keep track of which party you voted in the primary as the new Alabama law states you must vote for the same party if there is a runoff.

Something Diane Rovere says she thinks will simplify what's been an outdated process.

"There's a bar code where you put their driver's license in and it automatically scans it and their names comes up, there's no more looking through the book trying to find someone's name. It's really easy..."

And easy and efficient is hopefully what you'll experience on June 5th. Just remember to bring your driver's license.
Electronic pollbooks are in the process of being integrated throughout the state with the goal for them to be mandatory statewide by 2022.
