A medical marijuana bill advanced in Alabama.

The state Senate approved the bill by Sen. Tim Melson of Florence Wednesday afternoon.

Melson calls his bill "The Compassion Act."

It sets up guidelines for who can get medical marijuana, as well as how it is grown, processed and dispensed.

The 21-8 vote in the Senate now sends the medical marijuana bill to the state House for consideration.
