18-wheeler flips on Highway 72, driver hospitalized

One lane heading each was temporarily shut down to traffic following the accident.

Both east- and west-bound lanes of Highway 72 near Ryland Pike shut down temporarily on Monday morning following a wreck involving an 18-wheeler.

The truck appeared to be heading west-bound on Highway 72 when it crashed into the median ditch and flipped 180 degrees. The Madison County Sheriff's Office along with other first responders got the call around 2:50 a.m.

Several lanes were shut down throughout the morning to clean up the wreck.

Alabama State Troopers told WAAY 31 that the truck was carrying pharmaceuticals, dozens of containers of which spilled into the median.

The driver was examined by HEMSI paramedics at the scene before being taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

As of the publishing of this story, one lane in each direction on Highway 72 was closed. Both lanes on one side will be closed in order to bring in a wrecker to remove the truck.

Troopers were assisted in the wreck by the Madison County Sheriff's Office, Huntsville Fire and Rescue and the Huntsville-Madison County Rescue Squad.
